About Sandra
Who is Sandra and what the hell is Yoga Therapy?
After my third child, I was feeling low, and needed to get out of the house to do something for myself. That is when I started going regularly to yoga classes.
I grew up in Mackay with both my mum and dad as well as my 2 brothers and my sister. I am pretty sure I was the best and most well behaved out of all of us children 😊
As I child I could be found running around bare foot somewhere, swimming in the creek behind our house and as I grew older I could be found out riding my horses.
I moved to Townsville after high school where I met my soon to be husband Dave. We moved to Ingham, spending 5 years there where we had our first child. We moved back to Townsville and started our own mortgage broking business and I helped when I could having 2 more children shortly after our return.
After my third child I was feeling low, and needed to get out of the house to do something for myself. That is when I started going regularly to yoga classes.
I was in love with yoga! After 7 years there came a time for me where I wanted to take my love of yoga further. I didn’t want to be another regular yoga teacher as the thought of teaching in front of 30 people in a class sent shivers down my spine! I also felt that I wanted to use yoga in a way to help people feel better and heal their bodies.
Googling, I found Yoga Therapy, something I’d never heard of before. It involved working 1-on-1 with people which suited my introverted needs. It is used to help improve a wide array of conditions from musculoskeletal all the way through to mental conditions, using the yoga that I love but in a way that was highly individualised, tailoring the practice to each student's specific physical and mental condition, emotional state, age, cultural background, and interests. It sounded perfect!
I have completed both my Yoga Therapy training and my Yoga Teacher training in the Krishnamacharya tradition. Both of my teachers having been taught by Krishnamacharyas son, TKV Desikachar, where Viniyoga was the original Yoga Therapy, as it uses the same approach, that yoga is individualised and appropriate for the person’s needs.
Due to my commitment to the professionalism in Yoga Therapy and yoga teaching I have taken on the role of President of the Australasian Association of Yoga Therapists.
This position allows me to keep up to date with advances in our profession via research, training, continuing education, international and national standards. I am able to be informed and connected to my peers as well as have access to the best educators in this field.
